"Sadly it speaks to a long-standing pattern of behaviour by the Assad regime, a regime that we condemn, have sanctioned and will continue to bring about sanctions - working with our international friends and partners - to try and prevent behaviour like this occurring again."
Making a statement in the Commons, James Cleverly said:"As of this morning, we know that three British nationals are missing." Development minister Andrew Mitchell did not explain the delay other than to suggest it was on the Turkish side. Our cue to leave the medics to it, we set off along the snow lined roads of Urfa to see for ourselves the havoc that the 7.8 earthquake had caused.Until 36 hours earlier, it had been home to dozens of slumbering families. Worse, rescuers told us 35 people still lay trapped beneath the tortured mass of concrete and steel.
The parents of two young children hoping against hope their children will be pulled from the rubble traumatised but alive.Locals building fires on the nearby roadway to try to protect themselves and their neighbours from the bitter cold, determined not to leave while there's still hope. The window is closing for any rays of good news but while it's still open there's still hope.
