Christine Allen, director of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, told Sky News the amount raised by the Disasters Emergency Committee so far was a"real testimony to the general public".

Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, has met UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed today, the country's official media reports.
