"Survive the winter and have the basics of food, clean water somewhere to live and medical assistance. And then beyond that, possibly for at least another two years, we will try to help people get back on their feet. Christine Allen, director of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, told Sky News the amount raised by the Disasters Emergency Committee so far was a"real testimony to the general public".
Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, has met UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed today, the country's official media reports.
