A 7.8-magnitude earthquake has shaken Turkey and Syria, killing more than 360 people, according to authorities. The quake was centred in the town of Pazarcik at a depth of six miles and there were six powerful aftershocks, according to reports. Latest:

America is ready to support rescue efforts following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey, the US has told Turkish officials.

"I have been in touch with Turkish officials to relay that we stand ready to provide any and all needed assistance. The earthquake struck before dawn, when most people were in bed, asleep. That factor will likely add to the rapidly increasing death toll, as will severe aftershocks. Turkey, which sits on a fault line, has a history of earthquakes and therefore will have some expertise already on the ground, but this is already looking like a major disaster that will need all the international help available. More than 230 people have died in Syria alone, a senior official has told state TV.The last overall death toll we reported for both countries was 195 - including 76 in Turkey, 99 in government-held areas of Syria and 20 in rebel-held areas.

In the Turkish city of Diyarbakir at least 15 buildings have collapsed and rescue teams have called for silence as they listened for survivors in a toppled 11-storey building. The US Geological Survey said it was 18km deep and was followed by a strong 6.7 magnitude aftershock around 10 minutes later.
