Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin met with Hamas officials to discuss ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Israel. US officials suggest a deal may be near.
Ibrahim Kalin, head of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT), recently engaged in a phone call with Hamas Political Bureau officials, according to security sources. The conversation focused on the progress made in the ongoing negotiations with Israel and resulted in a consensus to continue efforts towards a ceasefire. This development comes amidst reports from US officials suggesting a potential deal may be imminent.
Turkey has consistently emerged as a prominent international supporter of the Palestinian cause and has actively participated in efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. Prisoner swap negotiations, facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, have experienced multiple interruptions due to new conditions imposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli opposition, along with families of captives, have accused Netanyahu of deliberately hindering progress towards a ceasefire agreement and a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas. Despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, the Israeli army has continued its offensive in Gaza, resulting in the tragic loss of nearly 46,600 lives, predominantly women and children, since October 7, 2023. The International Criminal Court (ICC) further escalated the situation by issuing arrest warrants in November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. Israel now faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) stemming from its ongoing war on the Palestinian enclave
