TUNISIA’S CAPITAL saw hundreds of protesters take to its streets to express support for migrants...

Hundreds took to the streets after Kais Saied said a rise in the numbers of people from sub-Saharan Africa in his country was part of a plot to erase his country’s cultural identity

Earlier in the week, President Saied claimed that the influx of immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa was part of a plot to erase his country’s identity. Saied also said that “urgent measures” were needed to address the entry of irregular immigrants from these countries, and accused them of being involved in violence and crimes.

During the protest, people chanted “no to racism,” “solidarity with migrants,” and “no to police crackdown” as they marched through central Tunis. He strongly criticised attempts that made been to drive some migrants out of their homes and prevent others from taking public transportation.
