After no top winners Friday, the first Mega Millions jackpot of 2023 will be the fourth-largest amount in the game’s history. After no ticket matched all six numbers in Friday’s drawing, the jackpot increased by about $145 million. The winning numbers were 1, 3, 6, 44 and 51, for the white balls and 7 for the gold Mega Ball.
The jackpot has only passed $700 million three other times, and each of those prizes eventually surpassed $1 billion before a winner was drawn, according to a Mega Millions news release. The last time a draw that size happened was a $1.05 billion pot on January 22, 2021.According to Mega Millions, players have a 1 in 24 chance of winning some sort of prize when they play ranging from $2 to the jackpot.
Some lottery players still took home cash from Friday’s drawing with one person winning a $1 million prize when their tickets matched all five white ball numbers but not the gold Mega Ball. Eighty-two others had tickets that matched four white ball numbers and the gold Mega ball, which won them the third-tier prize.
