The bear was shot and killed after the extremely rare attack.
Associated Press PRESCOTT — A bear attacked and killed a man at a campsite in central Arizona on Friday, authorities said.
Neighbors tried to help by making noises. But the bear was able to drag the victim several yards in the campsite in the Groom Creek area about 100 miles north of Phoenix. The last known fatal bear attack in Arizona happened in 2011 in the Pinetop area, further adding to the"extremely uncommon" nature of the attack, Darren Tucker, a field supervisor with Arizona Game and Fish, told The Arizona Republic on Friday, stating that it seemed"predatory in nature.
Sheriff's officials say there is no threat to the public. However, they are reminding people it is illegal to shoot or hunt a bear unless there is an immediate threat.
