'Seniors work the majority of their adult lives so they can spend their retirement comfortably,' Tuberville stated in an exclusive statement to Breitbart News prior to the bill's introduction. 'In this era where the cost of living has surged, our seniors should not endure a second tax on their Social Security, especially after already paying income tax on their earnings.' The Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act seeks to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 by removing both tier I railroad retirement benefits and Social Security benefits from an individual's gross income.The implementation of Tuberville's legislation would significantly reduce seniors' tax burden and eliminate the 'double tax' levied on federally earned benefits. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) echoed this sentiment, stating, 'Although seniors have already paid taxes on their Social Security contributions through payroll taxes, they are still required to report these benefits as taxable income on their tax returns.' Massie continued, 'This is simply a way for Congress to generate more revenue for the federal government at the expense of seniors who have already contributed to Social Security. My bill would exempt Social Security retirement benefits from taxation and bolster the retirement income of millions of older Americans.' This initiative follows Trump's vocal advocacy for protecting Social Security and Medicare, a stance he reiterated in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News at Mar-a-Lago in March 2024. Trump stated, 'We will have to look elsewhere. But we're not going to do anything to hurt them.' Tuberville's bill aligns with his recent announcement to serve on the Senate Committee on Aging in the 119th Congress.
