An unspecified number of San Diego Trolley riders may have been exposed to tuberculosis bacteria during a six-month period in 2022, the county health department reported Thursday.

A single transit rider who used the trolley Monday through Friday is said to have ridden on orange and blue lines from June 31 through Dec. 31, 2022. Specific times and lines include:Orange line from 12th and Imperial to El Cajon, 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.Blue line from 12th and Imperial to San Ysidro Transit Center, 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Two other MTS riders were reported to have contracted tuberculosis infections in August and September 2022, though neither has been linked to the most recent rider.Advertisement Symptoms of active infection include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Latent infections, which do not cause immediate symptoms, are also possible.

An estimated 175,000 people living in San Diego County are estimated to have latent infections. According to county records, 208 active tuberculosis cases were detected in 2022 with 201 in 2021 and 192 in 2020. Passengers who rode during those times are directed to contact their medical providers or the San Diego County TB Program — 692-8621— for more information.
