New survey data shows tanking public trust in the Coles and Woolworths brands in the wake of regulatory and government inquiries and the rise in the cost of living.
Woolworths has slipped from 2nd to 32nd place in the same survey, with researchers saying rising cost of living and public scrutiny has eroded trust in the major brands.The final recommendations of a government-commissioned review by former Trade Minister Craig Emerson will be delivered at the end of June.
Over the same time period, Woolworths slipped from 2nd on the the list of most trusted brands, to 34th, according to the Roy Morgan data.For years, big retailers have competed at the check-out while tightening the screws on those who stock their shelves and boost their profits. It's a far cry from the price-fixing tactics of Visy and Richard Pratt — but it seems the jig is up.
"With Qantas we saw betrayal after betrayal of people's trust, with Optus and Medicare we had huge data breaches, but with Coles and Woolworths there was no 'thing' that happened to people.
