The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service offers reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the illegal shooting of a Trumpeter Swan.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the illegal shooting of a trumpeter swan.According to Fish and Wildlife, on June 15 an adult trumpeter swan was found dead, floating on a pond along the road. A necropsy determined it had been shot.
Trumpeter swans are one of the largest flying bird species in the world with a wingspan of over 7 feet and an average lifespan of more than 12 years. They were previously on the endangered species list and have no hunting season. Trumpeter swans are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act as well as Alaska state law. The Fish and Wildlife Service continues to work with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Alaska Wildlife Troopers to protect these birds and solve these crimes. Violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a federal wildlife statute, carry maximum criminal penalties of up to $15,000.00 per person and up to 6 months of federal imprisonment.
