Trump opened his Waco rally by denouncing New York prosecutors who have probed his tax returns and his role in making alleged hush-money payments to porn actor Stormy Daniels. Live updates from Trump's speech here:
The rally got off to a fiery start with Florida U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz shaming Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for stalling on endorsing Trump for president in 2024, and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, declaring that the U.S. should be"bombing the Mexican cartels."Trump’s Waco speech was peppered with personal insults the former president hurled at his political foes.
“The district attorney in New York, under the auspices and direction of the department of injustice in Washington, D.C., was investigating me for something that’s not a crime,” Trump said. “Not a misdemeanor, not an affair.” “In my case, every piece of my life, financial life, business life and public life has been turned upside down and dissected like no one in the history of our country,” Trump said.Former President Donald Trump took the stage at his Waco rally shortly before 6 p.m., nearly an hour after he was first scheduled to speak.
“We have to take back the Department of Justice,” said U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene."You have to understand: they are not just coming after President Trump. They are coming after you, and President Trump is just the only one standing in their way.”Trump is still popular among Texas Republicans — though about a third of them said as recently as last month that the former president should not run again.
Trump’s backers have been encouraged by the polling nonetheless, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who said in an interview with RSBN Saturday that the polling shows he remains the Republican to beat in the primary. Still, the list did not include a majority of the state’s 25 Republican Congress members — one of whom, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, has. The remaining 13 members appear to be keeping their powder dry as the primary field continues to take shape.
Texans donated at least $5.2 million to the former president's campaign in 2021, when he held two rallies in the state. Texans accounted for about 7 percent of the nearly $73 million in itemized donations reported by the Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, Trump’s primary campaign fundraiser. Miller, a former rodeo cowboy who is rarely seen in public without a cowboy hat, was an early supporter of Trump and remains a diehard fan of the former president. He was speculated as a possible challenger to Gov. Greg Abbott in last year’s gubernatorial primary, and appeared to drop a hint that he’d like to run for the seat at some point.
That event has long been an anti-government rallying call for some on the far right. While the image might fit Trump’s message these days, his campaign said Waco was selected for its central location, not for any larger symbolic meaning.U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz shames Sen. Ted Cruz, Rep.
