President Trump will sign an executive order allowing service members discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine to rejoin the military. The order will direct the Secretary of Defense to reinstate these members, restoring their rank and providing back pay and benefits.
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order that will pave the way for service members who were discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine to rejoin the military. According to a White House fact sheet, the executive order instructs the Secretary of Defense to reinstate all active and reserve military members who were dismissed for their vaccination status and who apply for reinstatement.
Those who are reinstated will be returned to their previous rank and will receive back pay and benefits. The White House fact sheet highlights that, from 2021 to 2023, over 8,000 troops were discharged solely due to their COVID-19 vaccination status under the Biden administration and former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. It further notes that after the vaccine mandate was repealed in 2023, only 43 of the over 8,000 dismissed troops chose to return to service under the Biden administration and Secretary Austin. During his inauguration speech, President Trump had already pledged to take this action, although he had indicated he would do so last week. 'This week I will reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from our military for objecting to the COVID vaccine mandate, with full back pay,' the president stated during his address on January 20th.
