President Trump plans to temporarily halt funding for gain-of-function research, a type of scientific study that has faced scrutiny since the COVID-19 pandemic. His decision stems from concerns about the origins of the virus, particularly the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. Sen. Rand Paul, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, supports this move, emphasizing the risks associated with gain-of-function research.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the U.S. from the World Health Organization in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, January 20, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)to temporarily halt funding for gain of function research, a type of scientific study that has drawn increased scrutiny since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a disease so deadly it’s now blamed for the death of three million people in the first year alone.

Research conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China on a novel coronavirus remains a leading theory of how the virus came to be -- and possibly how it leaked out into the world. 'You know, it came out of the Wuhan lab, which I said right from the beginning, all of, all of you know. It didn't come out of a cave,' Trump reiterated during a September 17 campaign event in Michigan. It's one reason Trump is now working on a plan to halt funding for gain of function research, at least temporarily, with a new executive order. Senator Rand Paul, a Republican who represents Kentucky, is now the Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. He calls the move a top priority for his committee, as well. 'Gain of function research involves merging two viruses to create a more dangerous strain,' he said during an interview with Sinclair earlier this month. 'There was a safety committee. The research in Wuhan just went around the committee. It never was scrutinized by the safety committee,' Paul said. 'Yeah, I think the research occurred in China. The accident occurred in China, but we funded it.' Called 'Potential Risks and Benefits of Gain-of-Function Research,' the NIH insisted 'biomedical research has made enormous contributions to the understanding of disease and the development of cures and more effective vaccines and drugs.” Paul has drafted legislation, which has been dubbed the Risky Research Review Act, aimed at halting gain of function research.
