President Donald Trump plans to deploy "federal assets" across the nation to respond to protests that erupted last week over the police-involved death of an African American man in Minneapolis, the White House announced Monday.
In addition, the administration plans to set up a "central command center" that will include Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Mark Milley, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Attorney General William Barr, in conjunction with state and local officials, said White House spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany. She held back on further details, saying she didn't want to get ahead of any new announcements.McEnany made the comments after Trump was quoted as saying he would put Milley "in charge" of the protest response. McEnany seemed to indicate that Milley would be the face of the effort, noting that he has "been on point talking about the National Guard." During Trump's phone call with governors, Milley pointed to studies showing that "when there is an overwhelming National Guard presence it actually deescalates the situation and causes less civil unrest," McEnany said.“The sooner that you mass and dominate the battlespace the sooner this dissipates and we can get back to the right normal,” he said.
