In a ratcheting-up of his campaign, Donald Trump claims the outgoing chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff committed treason
’s most loyal supporters have supported the former president’s controversial suggestion that a top US general should be “put to death” for alleged treason.“This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH,” he wrote on Truth Social.
The Republican Party has always claimed to support the military. But at a recent Trump election rally in Iowa, 100 days before the state holds its caucus, plenty said they agreed with Mr Trump. When asked what had brought them to the rally, most said they liked the way Mr Trump had overseen the economy during his term in office. They also supported his calls to tighten the US-Mexico border, and some backed his calls to reduce spending money on Ukraine.

Some referred to his promise to nominate conservative judges to the Supreme Court, considered one of his major achievements by conservatives.
“The difference is that there were other senior figures such as Eisenhower to push back,” Mr Kabaservice, author of“Today, there’s no such force in the party. I haven’t heard any major Republican politician speak up against Trump’s threats against Milley.”
