Support for former Trump appears to be on the rise as GovRonDeSantis dips in recent polls. A new monmouthu poll shows Trump leading DeSantis by 14 percentage points in a shift from previous polls conducted in Feb and Dec.
A new poll from Monmouth University shows Trump leading DeSantis by 14 percentage points in a shift from previous polls conducted in February and December. The survey with a wide Republican presidential primary field shows Trump with 41%, DeSantis with 27%, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley with 3%, with all other candidates receiving 1% or less and 23% saying they do not know which candidate they would support.
Monmouth's poll in December 2022 showed DeSantis leading Trump in the wider field 39%-26%, and a February survey from the same pollster showed DeSantis and Trump tied with 33% each. In a head-to-head matchup with only DeSantis and Trump as options, the Florida governor now trails Trump 46%-47% after DeSantis was leading Trump 53%-40% in a survey conducted in February.
While Trump and DeSantis have both remained the front-runners of the GOP primary by a mile, DeSantis has seen his numbers slip since the beginning of 2023 as the memory of his nearly 20 percentage point reelection victory begins to fade. Trump, who backed several high-profile candidates who lost in the 2022 midterm elections, has seen his numbers climb as more time passes from the disappointing results of last November's elections.
The Florida governor fueled speculation of a run by saying on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Fox Nation that “if I were to run, I’m running against Biden." DeSantis also responded to Trump's nicknames for him, saying,"You can call me whatever you want, just as long as you also call me a 'winner.'"
