President Trump has issued an executive order requiring federal employees in the executive branch to return to full-time in-person work. The order aims to eliminate remote work arrangements and directs department and agency heads to take steps to implement this change as soon as practicable. While the directive doesn't set specific timelines, it gives agencies flexibility in how to enforce it, including the possibility of granting exemptions. The order has sparked mixed reactions, with Republican lawmakers supporting it and federal worker unions pushing back.
Here's what we know so far about President Trump's executive order on requiring federal employees to return to work in person full-timewas sworn in, he signed an executive order that aims to eliminate remote work among federal workers and get them back in the office full-time.
Excluding fully remote-eligible workers who do not have an in-person worksite, federal workers are in the office for about 79% of their working hours, according to the union. “Remote work is a work arrangement where an employee performs work from an alternate worksite and is not expected to report to an agency location on a regular and recurring basis.”
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser supports Trump’s efforts and has said his order to get more people back to downtown D.C. is one of the few things on which the two agree. Bowser has long tied the decline in retail and office space revenue downtown to a lack of federal workers going to their offices.
