President Donald Trump, in a surprising shift from his previous stance, suggested the U.S. may seek a new nuclear deal with Iran to avoid military conflict and prevent the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons. Trump, who withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal during his first term, signed an executive order to reinstate 'maximum pressure' sanctions on Iran but expressed a preference for negotiating a new agreement. He emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons while suggesting a willingness to engage in diplomacy.
President Donald Trump speaks after signing executive orders in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, in Washington.
After taking a hardline stance against Iran in his first term, including pulling the U.S. out of the nuclear deal, Trump has signaled openness to finding another one this week. It was a sharp change in tone from his first administration, but he was still committed to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens, ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The comments come after a post on his social media website Wednesday morning that said the U.S. should start working on a peace agreement “immediately,” which comes as Iran has signaled openness to restarting talks with the U.S.
