President-elect Donald Trump has made a last-ditch effort to stop his sentencing in the New York hush money case, appealing to both the New York Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump's legal team argues for a delay based on a claim of president-elect immunity, but prosecutors contend this argument is baseless and that a president-elect is not afforded the same protections as an incumbent president. Trump faces a potential four-year prison sentence but is likely to receive an unconditional discharge, according to the judge.

Trump has also asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his sentencing.President-elect Donald Trump has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent Friday's sentencing in his New York criminal hush money case.

Prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney's office argued in a Thursday morning filing, before the court made its ruling, that Trump's argument to delay his sentencing rests on an "utterly baseless" concept of president-elect immunity. Trump is scheduled to be sentenced Friday after he was found guilty in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in order to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutors criticized Trump for repeatedly delaying the sentencing -- leading to the Jan. 10 sentencing date -- and exaggerating the harm he would face if the sentencing continued as planned.
