Over the weekend, President-elect Donald Trump expressed a desire to end birthright citizenship — a right conferred to every individual born in the United States — through executive order, an action that would be in violation of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.“Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker.
Although passed in large part to ensure that formerly enslaved Black Americans would receive the same rights as white citizens, the 14th Amendment also sought to ensure that all future residents born in the country would receive such rights,. Legal experts say that Trump cannot undo birthright citizenship simply through a stroke of his pen, and that an entirely new constitutional amendment would be required to change the standard.
We must give ourselves space to grieve and feel our fear, feel our rage, and keep in the forefront of our mind the stark truth that millions of real human lives are on the line. And simultaneously, we’ve got to get to work, take stock of our resources, and prepare to throw ourselves full force into the movement.Even as we are reeling, we’re summoning up all the energy we can to face down what’s coming, because we know that one of the sharpest weapons against fascism is publishing the truth.
