President Donald Trump said Wednesday that all U.S. troops remaining in Afghanistan should be “home by Christmas,” a date that is months ahead of plans to prepare for a withdrawal by May 2021, provided the Taliban meets conditions of a peace agreement struck in February.
The Department of Defense recently announced a significant cut in U.S. troops in Afghanistan, culminating in the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country by May of 2021. Fewer than 9,000 troops currently remain in Afghanistan, and the Department of Defense said in a news release last month the troop number is expected to drop below 5,000 by the end of November., but the troop level would drop drastically during President Barack Obama’s second term, a trend that’s continued during Trump’s presidency.This is a developing story.
