House Democrats are introducing legislation that they describe as a remedy “against future abuse.'
, PODA would require “transparency of tax records of presidential candidates,” mandate “disclosure of contacts between the White House and Justice Department,” and extend “the deadline for prosecuting former presidents and vice presidents for federal crimes committed before or during their time in office.”
The website promoting the legislation calls out Trump by name, as its authors view his “abuses as lessons” that both parties must learn and adapt from going forward. “The proposals respond to long-standing vulnerabilities in our democracy that have allowed for the aggrandizement of presidential power, many of which have been exploited over decades by presidents of both parties, and some of which reached new heights through the actions of the Trump administration,” the site adds.
Even though some Republicans have previously supported components of the new legislation, getting at least 10 senators to join the Democrats and bring it to a vote could be a challenge if the bill is seen as an “implicit rebuke” of Trump’s behavior,
