Trump's recent support for the H-1B visa program has ignited controversy within the Republican Party, raising concerns about immigration policy and potential internal conflicts.
Over the weekend, Trump expressed support for the H-1B visa program, stating he employs many such workers on his properties. This stance has drawn criticism from some who believe that his support, coupled with endorsements from tech giants, has pushed him further to the center on the issue. The debate has put the Republican Party in a difficult position as it considers immigration reform and border security funding in early 2025.
This could potentially trigger a 'civil war' within the party until it can unify its message on the visa issue. The H-1B visa allows foreign workers with a bachelor's degree or equivalent to work in the country for three years, with an extension possibility for another three years. These visas are intended for specialty occupations, and employers must petition the USCIS, demonstrating their inability to fill the position with a US worker. Historically, these visas have primarily been granted to workers in information technology, computer sciences, systems analysis, engineering, university professors, and healthcare. Corporations like Amazon, Google, Meta, Apple, and IBM are known recipients of H-1B visa holders. H-1B visa recipients must be paid at least $60,000, which is lower than the 2023 median US household income of $80,600, according to the Census Bureau. There are 65,000 visas allocated to workers overseas seeking admission and an additional 20,000 reserved for recent US master's degree or doctorate graduates. Trump's record on the H-1B visa is complex. Even before the 2016 presidential election, Republican lawmakers were raising concerns about the program. Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) proposed a bill to impose strict limitations on the employment of H-1B recipients. Former Sen. Jeff Sessions, who later became Trump's attorney general, and Sen.
