A tight race for Virginia governor sees Trump's early performance in the White House as a key factor for Republican lieutenant governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
With the Virginia gubernatorial race locked in a monthlong tie, President-elect Donald Trump 's early performance in office will likely be the deal-maker — or breaker — for Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears . Polls show that each candidate is within the margin of error, making it a truly competitive race.
Political analysts emphasize that because Virginia gubernatorial races follow a year after presidential elections, the sitting president can have a significant impact, both positive and negative. For example, the popularity of President Joe Biden plummeted in his first year after the chaotic withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Typically, the winner in the commonwealth's governor's race hails from a party different from the president. However, Trump's influence is unique and difficult to predict. While voters in a recent survey don't expect him to be successful, he also managed to garner more minority votes, an area where Earle-Sears tends to underperform. The outcome of Trump's presidency is seen as a crucial factor in this gubernatorial race. If Trump is popular and people are satisfied with his performance, it will undoubtedly benefit Earle-Sears. Conversely, if Trump is unpopular and facing negative reactions, it could swing the race in favor of Spanberger. The pre-presidential election disagreement between Earle-Sears and Trump, where she suggested the GOP needed a new candidate, has also been analyzed. Although Trump expressed displeasure, Earle-Sears has since been supportive of him, particularly during the election season. The survey revealed that Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has maintained his popularity during his term-limited four years, currently enjoying a 53% approval rating in a state considered Democratic. Youngkin's popularity is anticipated to be a significant asset for Earle-Sears, providing benefits in fundraising and enabling her to promote a broad platform they have addressed together during their time leading the state. Notably, Virginians are unusually pleased under Youngkin's leadership. Almost half (49%) believe the commonwealth is headed in the right direction compared to 31% who feel it's heading in the wrong direction. The gubernatorial race is also influenced by a considerable number of undecided voters. While Spanberger leads Earle-Sears 44%-39%, 16% are still undecided. Both black voters and Republicans are within this undecided group. Bromley-Trujillo suggests that once Republicans rally behind Earle-Sears, the first black woman to be lieutenant governor, the race is likely to tighten further. Spanberger is currently performing well within her own party, securing 95% of Democratic support, while Earle-Sears enjoys 87% backing from Republicans. This indicates that Earle-Sears has room for growth, as partisans tend to align with their respective party's candidates closer to Election Day.
