The order is a reminder that Americans live in two different worlds regarding the government’s use of the ultimate punishment.

Some of what he wants to accomplish seems to be of dubious legality. Some of it will raise the specter of gratuitous cruelty. Hanson “was also sentenced to death in Oklahoma for two murders … but the Federal Bureau of Prisons refused to transfer him to the custody of the state.” The Trump Justice Department could now turn him over to Oklahoma authorities so his “execution can be carried out.”
