Republicans are going to the mats for Donald Trump yet again, fighting on behalf of a man who has only ever really fought for himself.
But, as the Capitol attack two years ago made clear, there is also a great deal of danger in their overheated statements. In 2021, Trump incited violence to try to remain in office. Now, he’s attempting to do the same to stay out of jail. It’s not that Republicans don’t know where this all leads; after all, McCarthy is hedging against demonstrations around any Trump charges.
