It’s a shame that Donald Trump canceled that press conference he had planned for Monday in Bedminister.“In the 2024 election, do you intend to have just one slate of electors representing you on state ballots? Or will you have two?”
The Donald’s fake-elector scheme fell apart after Mike Pence, acting in his capacity as President of the Senate, said the Constitution did not give him the power to recognize electors who had not appeared on the ballot in the states in question. That’s assuming the Republicans were as committed to political suicide in Washington, D.C., as the followers of Jim Jones in Jonestown, Guyana, were to actual suicide.
As for Trump, he’s never come near winning the popular vote. He lost it by three million in 2016. He became president that year only because of the Electoral College vote – and a lot of luck. His votes just happened to fall in the right states. But amending the Constitution to eliminate the Electoral College would require the approval of 38 state legislatures. The small states stand in the way. If you live in a state like Wyoming or Montana, your vote for president has four times the effect of a vote cast in California. Why give up that advantage?The state legislatures that sign up for the compact agree to award their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.
