The Education Department (DoEd) is launching a federal investigation into five universities following widespread reports of alleged antisemitism on campuses after the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, 2023. The DoEd, under the leadership of President Trump, alleges that the Biden Administration 's previous attempts to address the issue were ineffective.

The investigation will focus on Columbia University, Northwestern University, Portland State University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the DoEd, Craig Trainor, stated that the department is deeply concerned about the prevalence of antisemitic harassment and the illegal encampments that disrupted campus life last year, forcing Jewish students to curtail their religious expression. Trainor emphasized that the department will not tolerate universities' indifference to the well-being of Jewish students and will take action against those who fail to combat antisemitism and the violence it incites.Several universities have responded to the investigation. Northwestern University affirmed its commitment to a safe and inclusive environment, stating that free expression does not justify behavior that threatens others. Portland State University echoed this commitment, stating their dedication to upholding a respectful community and their ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism. The University of Minnesota expressed confidence in their approach to addressing hate and bias on campus and pledged full cooperation with the investigation. Columbia University has yet to issue a statement. Furthermore, the investigation follows a letter sent by the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Committee on Education and the Workforce to Columbia University in September. The letter inquired about the university's efforts to ensure a safe environment for all members, particularly in light of receiving significant funding through Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) grants. Columbia University reportedly received $611,173,605 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants in fiscal year 2024
