The president’s made-for-TV showmanship has been all over his first days in office, as he has sought to kick off the country’s largest mass deportation effort.
On Monday, two flights took off from the U.S. transporting migrants to Guatemala . One was a standard Immigrations and Customs Enforcement charter flight that left Louisiana with about 120 deportees onboard and flew directly to the Central American country. The other, a military cargo plane, departed El Paso with about 60 migrants and flew all the way to Costa Rica before circling back north to Guatemala , apparently to avoid entering Mexican airspace.

But Trump has clearly laid the groundwork for a much larger rap up in the weeks and months ahead, they say, with a slew of executive orders that would reshape the immigration system. Those include lifting restrictions on ICE arrests around churches and schools and attempting to deputize state and local police to make deportations. The administration has also reportedly issued arrest quotas to ICE agents.
Trump has promised mass deportations. His model is an Eisenhower program with an ugly history Cesar Espinosa, the executive director of FIEL Houston, a prominent immigrant rights group, told the Houston Chronicle last week that his organization was fielding a deluge of questions from immigrants about their rights. An arrest quota ICE, meanwhile, has reported more than 900 arrests a day over the past several days — roughly triple the daily average during the Biden administration.
