The Dallas businessman who led Donald Trump’s campaign finance operation is taking a wait-and-see approach on joining the former president’s 2024 White House...
Like the rest of the Republican Party, some donors are waiting to see if anybody, DeSantis included, is a threat to wrestle the presidential nomination from Trump, who remains popular with grassroots voters who dominate the primary process.
Many analysts say Trump is favored to become the GOP nominee for president, especially if there is a crowded GOP primary similar to 2016.shows eroding support for Trump. Republicans and independents surveyed prefer DeSantis over Trump by a 56% to 33% margin.The poll is notable because over the years Trump has managed to maintain firm control of his base, even as he maneuvered in and out of controversy.
“They want to win. There’s no question about it,” said Plano-based Republican political consultant Vinny Minchillo, who worked on Utah Sen. Mitt Romney’s campaigns. “Big donors want to be attached with somebody who they think can win both the primary and the general elections…they don’t like to be embarrassed to be associated with somebody.”“DeSantis is for real,” he said. “He’s a great landing place for conservatives who were on the Trump train, but now just can’t do it anymore.
For all the buzz about DeSantis, Minchillo and other political consultants said Trump is the frontrunner.
