Despite making several controversial decisions, President Trump enjoys a higher approval rating than at the start of his first term. However, his close relationship with Elon Musk, who enjoys a declining public approval rating, could pose a challenge to this positive trend.

Donald Trump has undoubtedly made several unexpected and controversial moves since returning to office. However, the public has generally been willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. One potential issue, though, could be the relationship between Trump and Elon Musk , which might threaten this goodwill. Trump currently enjoys a 10-point higher approval rating than he did at the start of his first term, with 46% of voters approving of his performance.

43% disapprove, while 11% remain undecided. In comparison, a Quinnipiac poll conducted on January 26, 2017, showed only 36% approval and 44% disapproval for Trump's performance, with 19% abstaining from an opinion. The recent Quinnipiac poll emerged shortly after CNN's Harry Enten presented compelling data from a Reuters/Ipsos poll, revealing that the American people seem pleased with Trump's current trajectory, particularly in contrast to his initial approval ratings in 2017. Enten highlighted that Trump's net approval rating was -3 points when he took office in January 2017 but has now improved to +6 points. He underscored that the current situation marks a significant shift from Trump's historic negative approval rating at the outset of his first presidency. Enten further emphasized that Trump's performance in his second term is exceeding even his best ratings during his first administration. While there's positive news for Trump in terms of public perception, a separate report by Enten last week raises a potential concern. According to Enten, Elon Musk's net favorability rating has dropped to -13 points, a sharp decline from -3 points before the election and significantly lower than the +29 points he enjoyed prior to the 2016 election. A Wall Street Journal poll conducted in January found that 60% of respondents viewed it as unwise for a president to rely on billionaires for policy advice. The Quinnipiac poll revealed that a majority of respondents disapproved of Musk's role in the Trump administration. Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst, noted that Musk receives a mixed reception from voters, with women expressing significantly more disapproval compared to men. However, Musk does retain some positive support among Republicans, with 75% expressing a favorable view of him according to the Reuters/Ipsos poll. In contrast, 90% of Democrats view him unfavorably. Despite these mixed signals, Trump appears unwavering in his willingness to allow Musk to influence government decisions. The close working relationship between the two has undoubtedly generated significant media attention. It remains to be seen how public opinion will evolve in the coming weeks and whether Musk's involvement becomes a liability for the president
