The article analyzes the concerning trend of male victimhood narratives promoted by the Trump administration. Drawing parallels to the author's experience treating abusive patients, the piece highlights the dangerous implications of validating violence against women and the normalization of harmful behavior.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth arrives at the Pentagon for the first time since being confirmed Jan. 27, 2025, in Arlington, Va. on Jan. 12, “If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned,” Vice President JD Vance flip-flopped, laterthe blanket clemency issued by arguing the prosecution was politically motivated and claiming violation of due process.

My patient dragged his feet as we walked into the interview room. He had a history of “domestic disputes” with different women and was taken into police custody after his most recent “dispute,” once police discovered a warrant for his arrest for previously assaulting another woman. While in custody, he began yelling that he would kill himself.

Red flags went up. “I’m wondering what could have happened to make her feel the police needed to be called?”“I don’t know what those females’ intentions are. A lot of them have bad intentions.”I’ve yet to meet an abusive male patient who takes full responsibility for his actions. Many of these men possess narcissistic traits—their egos are so fragile that any criticism is perceived as a threat to their very sense of self. In their minds, they can do no wrong; everyone else is a problem.

I tell my medical students facetiously: “The diagnosis is narcissistic personality disorder when everyone else ends up in therapy, except the person who actually needs therapy.” But there is no space for comedy when a victim lands in the trauma bay or a coffin. When narcissistic traits intersect with abusive tendencies, the combination may be lethal. Even then, abusive patients deny any wrongdoing.
