Former National Security Advisor John Bolton revealed that President Donald Trump revoked his Secret Service protection after his inauguration. Bolton cited ongoing threats from Iran, which included an alleged assassination plot in 2021. This decision comes after years of tension between Bolton and Trump, with both men publicly criticizing each other.
Former National Security Advisor John Bolton revealed that President Donald Trump revoked his Secret Service protection following Trump's inauguration as the 47th president on Monday. Bolton disclosed this information to Fox News Digital on Tuesday, stating, 'I am disappointed but not surprised that President Trump has decided to terminate the protection previously provided by the United States Secret Service.
' Despite his criticisms of President Biden's national security policies, Bolton expressed gratitude towards Biden for extending his security detail in 2021. Bolton has been facing threats from Iran for years, including an alleged plot to assassinate him in 2021. The Department of Justice subsequently charged a member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for the plot in 2022. Trump had dismissed Bolton from his first administration in 2019, while Biden reinstated the security detail in 2021. When questioned by reporters on Tuesday about his decision to revoke Bolton's security clearance, Trump remarked, 'Because I think that was enough time. We’re not going to have security on people for the rest of their lives. Why should we?'Bolton, in his statement to Fox News Digital, emphasized the ongoing threat from Iran, citing the Justice Department's 2022 charges against an Iranian Revolutionary Guard official for attempting to hire a hitman to target him. He also mentioned the recent arrest of someone attempting to arrange an assassination of President Trump, reinforcing the severity of the threats. Bolton concluded his statement by stating, 'The American people can judge for themselves which President made the right call.' The Iranian threats against Bolton are believed to be linked to the January 2020 U.S. strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Quds Force, as reported by the Department of Justice in 2022. Bolton served as Trump's national security advisor from 2018 to 2019 before being ousted due to policy disagreements. Trump announced Bolton's resignation via Twitter in 2019, stating, 'I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.' In subsequent years, Trump continued to criticize Bolton, alleging that he would have instigated 'World War Six' and labeling him 'one of the dumbest people in Government' in 2023. Bolton, in turn, has criticized Trump, suggesting in a 2020 interview that Trump lacks the 'competency to carry out the job' and claiming, 'I don’t think he’s fit for office. I don’t think he has the competency to carry out the job. There isn’t really any guiding principle that I was able to discern, other than what’s good for Donald Trump’s reelection.'
