Former President Trump takes action to limit Biden's access to classified information, citing a perceived double standard and escalating tensions with his political opponents.
Former President Donald Trump , in his ongoing crusade against his political adversaries, has taken yet another action aimed at limiting access to classified information by his predecessor, President Joe Biden. Trump announced his decision to revoke Biden's security clearances and halt his daily intelligence briefings in a post on his social media platform shortly after arriving at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump justified his move by citing a precedent set by Biden in 2021, when he instructed the Intelligence Community to cease providing then-President Trump with access to national security details, a courtesy typically extended to former presidents. Trump argued that Biden's actions were hypocritical, as he is now denying Trump the same access. This latest move adds to the list of retaliatory actions Trump has taken against Washington since leaving office, a pattern of behavior he had promised during his campaign. Trump's decision to revoke Biden's security clearances comes amidst ongoing legal battles surrounding Trump's own handling of classified documents. In 2022, federal agents searched Trump's Florida residence and seized boxes of classified records. He was subsequently indicted on dozens of felony counts accusing him of mishandling classified information and obstructing the FBI's efforts to retrieve them. Trump pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing. While a judge dismissed the charges, ruling that the special counsel who brought them was illegally appointed, the Justice Department ultimately gave up appeals after Trump's election victory in November. Adding to the controversy, Trump dismissed Colleen Shogan as the archivist of the United States. He had previously indicated his intention to replace the head of the National Archives and Records Administration, an agency that drew his ire after informing the Justice Department about concerns regarding Trump's handling of classified documents. Shogan, the first woman to hold the position, was not the archivist at the time the issue first arose
