Donald Trump, the president-elect, has expressed his opposition to banning TikTok, arguing that he benefits from the platform's vast reach. This comes after a previous call for a ban in 2020 over national security concerns regarding ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company.

President-elect Donald Trump stated his opposition to banning TikTok, citing the app's substantial viewership for Trump-related content. In a Truth Social post, Trump questioned the rationale for banning TikTok, accompanying his message with a graphic that purportedly showed billions of views on Trump-related TikTok content. The source of this graphic remains unconfirmed, and Newsweek was unable to independently verify the data.

Newsweek reached out to both the Trump transition team and TikTok for comment. This stance reversal comes after Trump previously advocated for TikTok's ban in 2020 due to national security concerns regarding its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. A graphic accompanying Trump's post indicated that his @realdonaldtrump TikTok account, boasting 14.7 million followers, has accumulated 1.4 billion total views. The @teamtrump campaign account, with 8.3 million followers, has amassed 2.4 billion total views. The graphic further claimed that Trump and his campaign's TikTok accounts receive five and eight times more views on TikTok compared to their respective Instagram accounts. Videos using the hashtag #trump have garnered 36 billion views, #donaldtrump 15 billion views, and #trump2024 10 billion views on TikTok. On December 27th, Trump's legal team submitted an amicus brief requesting the Supreme Court to temporarily suspend the enforcement of a law that would ban TikTok unless ByteDance sells the app by January 19th, the day before Trump's inauguration. Congress passed this ban in April 2024, citing concerns about ByteDance's alleged links to the Chinese government. ByteDance has maintained that it will not sell TikTok
