Former President Trump signed an executive order reversing a Biden administration policy to phase out federal purchases of single-use plastics, including straws. Trump cited the inconvenience of paper straws and argued that the move is a step towards 'common sense'. This decision has been met with criticism from environmental groups who point to the widespread harm caused by plastic pollution.
Trump signed an executive order Monday, saying: “It’s a ridiculous situation. We’re going back to plastic straws”
Trump’s order is “more about messaging than finding solutions,″ said Christy Leavitt, plastics campaign director for the environmental group Oceana, noting that most U.S. voters support requiring companies to reduce single-use plastic packaging and foodware. Plastic pollution has been found on the surface of the sea, washing up on remote coastlines, melting out of Arctic sea ice and sitting at the deepest point of the ocean floor, Leavitt said. “It is everywhere.”“Straws are just the beginning,” said Matt Seaholm, president and CEO of the Plastics Industry Association. “‘Back to Plastic’ is a movement we should all get behind.”
