President-elect Donald Trump plans to reverse the 2015 decision to rename Denali back to Mount McKinley.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It’s been an issue in Alaska for generations. In a speech Sunday night, President-Elect Donald Trump says he plans to weigh in on the name of America’s tallest mountain.Speaking at a conservative conference Sunday night, Trump said he plans to reverse the 2015 Obama-era decision that restored the mountain’s traditional Alaska Native name, Denali. The peak was officially named Mount McKinley from 1917 to 2015, honoring the 25th president, William McKinley.
Trump initially backed off the renaming in 2017 after Alaska’s senators opposed the move.“President McKinley was the president that was responsible for creating a vast sum of money in the United States that Teddy Roosevelt then spent,” Trump said. “So let’s say they were both excellent presidents. But McKinley did that, and that’s one of the reasons that we’re going to bring back the name of Mount McKinley because I think he deserves it.” The move to rename the mountain nearly a decade ago was celebrated by many Alaskans as a significant step in honoring Native heritage and traditions. Yet, the decision faced pushback from critics, who argued it undermined the legacy of President McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901
