President Trump tapped former Border Patrol chief under former President Barack Obama to run the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency a month after he withdrew his previous nominee to go “in a tougher direction.”
Morgan was a career FBI official who’d been chosen by former FBI Director James Comey to serve as the chief of the Border Patrol during the final six months of the Obama administration. He left days after Trump took office, but remained a staunch supporter of Trump’s immigration policies. In an April interview on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Morgan voiced his support of Trump's zero tolerance policy, which led to the separation of families and to children being detained in cages who might never be reunited with their parents. He also supported immigration efforts during the Obama administration.
“And those cages?” continued Morgan in response to claims that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused the U.S. of separating children, putting them in cages and drugging them. “The reason why they are designed that way is for the safety and security of the people that are in there. So, those comments that she is making are — first of all, she is wrong. They are reckless and irresponsible.”
