The Trump Organization is reportedly in talks to bring back their hotel to the Old Post Office Building in Washington D.C., raising questions about the future of José Andrés's restaurant, The Bazaar, which currently operates there.
The Trump Organization is exploring the possibility of reviving its presence in Washington, D.C., with talks to reclaim the Old Post Office Building on Pennsylvania Avenue, currently home to the Waldorf Astoria . This development comes after Eric Trump reportedly met with an executive from BDT & MSD Partners, the firm that holds the building's long-term lease, at Mar-a-Lago last week.
If a deal is struck, it would create a complex situation for José Andrés, the renowned chef who previously backed out of a restaurant agreement with the Trump hotel. Andrés now operates his upscale eatery, The Bazaar, within the Waldorf Astoria. While Andrés' hospitality company, José Andrés Group, has stated that there are no plans to change the restaurant's operations regardless of the hotel's ownership and that they remain committed to operating at the historic Old Post Office, the situation raises questions about potential future dynamics.Andrés's past relationship with the Trump Organization is noteworthy. In 2014, he had planned to open a fine-dining restaurant within the original Trump hotel. However, when Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign with controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants, Andrés withdrew from the agreement, citing the impossibility of proceeding with a restaurant in a space associated with such divisive rhetoric. Andrés's team, comprised largely of Hispanic individuals, and his own identity as a Spanish immigrant and naturalized American citizen, made it impossible for him to reconcile with Trump's statements. The ensuing legal battles ultimately settled in 2017 under undisclosed terms. Throughout Trump's presidency, Andrés positioned himself as a counterpoint to Trump's policies, frequently criticizing him on social media. The irony was not lost on many when the Trump hotel closed and was rebranded as a Waldorf Astoria, allowing Andrés to return to the property with the 2023 opening of The Bazaar.
