President Trump signed two executive orders on his first day in office, aiming to restrict transgender rights and dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the federal government. The first order mandates the use of 'sex' instead of 'gender' in government documents and aims to prevent taxpayer funds from being used for gender-transition healthcare. It also seeks to ensure 'privacy in intimate spaces' in facilities like prisons and shelters, potentially impacting transgender individuals. The second order targets DEI programs, aiming to end what it calls 'radical and wasteful' initiatives and 'dismantle the DEI bureaucracy.' Critics argue these orders are discriminatory and will set back progress on racial and LGBTQ+ equality.

White House officials grouped both orders under the Trump administration’s wider “restoring sanity” agenda

The new administration will hold monthly meetings with the deputy secretaries of key agencies to “assess what type of DEI programs are still discriminating against Americans and figure out ways to end them,” the official continued, adding that the new administration intends to “dismantle the DEI bureaucracy,” singling out environmental justice programs and equity-related grants.

The proponents of DEI in American society have argued that such initiatives are essential to make companies, schools, government agencies and other institutions more racially and socially inclusive. She added that “any incoming president can set the policies for the federal administration” but that it would be disconcerting if it becomes permissible for employers or the government to “discriminate on the basis of race or sex.”Jennifer C. Pizer, the chief legal officer at Lambda Legal, a civil rights organization that litigates on behalf of LGBTQ Americans, said she expects her organization and others to sue the administration over the executive actions.
