President Trump signed an executive order to rename Denali, North America's highest peak, back to Mount McKinley after William McKinley, the 25th president. This decision faces resistance from Alaskan lawmakers, leading to a proposed compromise of keeping Mount McKinley as the mountain's name while preserving Denali National Park and Preserve.
When President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office to rename North America's tallest peak, known as Denali in Alaska , after President William McKinley, one descendant of the 25th president was beyond elated. 'He deserves to have the mountain named after him,' Massee McKinley, a great-great nephew, said Thursday. 'He had unparalleled integrity. People respected him.
He said he told him: ''Alaska Native people named that mountain over 10,000 years ago. And by the way, that was the Athabascan people, and my wife's Athabascan, and if you change that name back now she's gonna be really, really mad.' So he was like, 'All right, we won't do that.'' But Trump said at campaign rallies that he would change Denali's name to recognize McKinley, who was president from 1897 until his assassination in 1901.
