President Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the release of remaining classified documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The order calls for a plan to be presented within 15 days for the 'full and complete' release of these documents.

President Donald Trump , keeping a campaign promise, issued an executive order on Thursday to release the remaining classified documents concerning the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy in downtown Dallas. The order also mandates the release of documents related to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

While the order doesn't immediately make these records public, it instructs the Director of National Intelligence to present a plan within 15 days for the 'full and complete' release of the records. The director has 45 days to review records pertaining to Robert F. Kennedy and King and present a plan for their release. This isn't Trump's first endeavor to release classified documents. Although the executive order sets a firm deadline for the creation of a plan to release the documents, it lacks guidance on the precise timeline for their actual release. The contents of these remaining documents remain unknown, as does the extent of redaction they may contain. The Associated Press reports that a few thousand documents are still awaiting declassification. Experts doubt these documents will contain any groundbreaking or earth-shattering revelations. While the release of these documents will likely please historians and conspiracy theorists, JFK's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, criticized the move, calling it a 'political prop'. On social media platform X, Schlossberg stated, 'The truth is a lot sadder than the myth — a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Not part of an inevitable grand scheme,' adding, 'Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back. There’s nothing heroic about it.' Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son of the late senator and Trump's Health and Human Services nominee, expressed a different view, calling the order a 'great move' and praising Trump for keeping his promise to bring 'more transparency' to the government and 'tell the American people the truth about everything.' Kennedy has previously called for answers regarding his father and uncle's assassinations. Following the signing of the executive order, Trump presented the pen he used to an aide, instructing them to deliver it to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. King's family released a statement on social media, expressing their hope to review the files as a family before they are made public. 'For us, the assassination of our father is a deeply personal family loss that we have endured over the last 56 years,' the family stated. 'We hope to be provided the opportunity to review the files as a family prior to its public release.
