Donald Trump directs the release of remaining government records related to the assassinations of JFK, MLK, and RFK, sparking both excitement and renewed conspiracy theories.

President Donald Trump 's critics were notably enthusiastic on Thursday when he issued an order to declassify all remaining records pertaining to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. , and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. Trump had long campaigned on a promise to release the so-called 'JFK files,' a vast collection of government documents surrounding Kennedy's death in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963.

'That's a big one, huh?' Trump stated while signing the order. 'A lot of people are waiting for this for a long — for years, for decades.' Trump's directive was met with widespread acclaim, transcending partisan divides and garnering praise from even his most vocal detractors. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks and a prominent left-wing political commentator, expressed his support for the move, stating, 'Trump ordering the release of government files on JFK, RFK and MLK assassinations is a great thing. I don't know how much of the real evidence is in there, but I'll take it. And I'd like to remind my friends on the left, releasing the files was originally a left-wing position.' Mike Nellis, a Democratic strategist and former advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, also conveyed his interest in examining the files, tweeting, 'Me: Don't get distracted by the weird stuff Donald Trump does ... Also me: I'd like to take a look at those JFK and MLK assassination files,' accompanied by a GIF from the television show Schitt's Creek. Even Michael Smerconish, a radio host and CNN commentator known for his criticism of Trump, acknowledged his long-standing desire to see the complete JFK and MLK files but cautioned, 'make no mistake, right now, this is the ultimate shiny object.' The 'JFK files' encompass thousands of government documents, including investigative reports, memos, communications, and other materials related to the government's investigation into Kennedy's assassination. The documents have been the subject of intense public scrutiny and numerous conspiracy theories. The JFK Records Act of 1992 mandated the release of all records related to the assassination by October 26, 2017, barring national security concerns. While Trump began declassifying documents after that deadline, citing potential risks to sources and methods, he withheld some files. During President Joe Biden's administration, thousands more documents were made public, with the White House asserting in July 2023 that 99 percent of records associated with Kennedy's assassination are available to the public through the National Archives. Despite the widespread release, many documents remain redacted, fueling ongoing speculation about the circumstances surrounding Kennedy's death and the government's investigation.
