President-elect Donald Trump is considering issuing an executive order to prevent a national ban on TikTok from going into effect.

President Donald Trump pumps his fist as he finishes speaking during an event at the Whirlpool Corporation facility in Clyde, Ohio, Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020.

President-elect Donald Trump is considering issuing an executive order to prevent a national ban on TikTok from going into effect, according to a report from Lawmakers have long sought to restrict or outright ban TikTok, a Chinese-owned social media app, from operating in the United States due to data and security concerns. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, must sell the social media platform by January 19 to avoid a ban from going into place, according to a law passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden last year.

Trump vowed on the campaign trail to save TikTok from a possible ban despite several Republican members of Congress voting the opposite direction last year. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week in a lawsuit challenging the ban. It is unclear when the Supreme Court will issue a ruling on the matter.
