President Trump ridiculed Time magazine on Friday, expressing disbelief that it was still operational, after the publication used an image of Elon Musk seated at the Resolute Desk for its cover. A reporter inquired about Trump's response to the Time cover, which portrays Musk occupying the presidential chair.
The accompanying cover story, titled 'Inside Elon Musk’s War on Washington,' emerges amidst criticisms leveled against President Trump, suggesting Musk wields excessive influence as he heads Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). 'Is Time magazine still in business? I didn't even know that,' Trump stated, accompanied by audible laughter from those present. 'HE'S BACK': TIME MAGAZINE'S TRUMP INAUGURATION COVER DRAWS GLEEFUL REACTION FROM CONSERVATIVES 'Elon is doing a great job. He's finding tremendous fraud and corruption and waste. You see it with the USAID, but you're going to see it even more so with other agencies and other parts of government. He's got a staff that's fantastic,' Trump continued. 'He's wanted to be able to do this for a long time.' TRUMP POSTS ‘HOW IT'S GOING’ MESSAGE CONTRASTING TIME PERSON OF THE YEAR COVER WITH MUGSHOT Musk has targeted the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in his efforts to curb government spending. Trump expressed satisfaction with the progress made and asserted that other government agencies would also be affected by DOGE. 'The whole thing is a fraud. Very little being put to good use. Every single line that I look at, in terms of events and transactions, is either corrupt or ridiculous and we're going to be doing that throughout government, and I think we're going to be very close to balancing budgets for the first time in many years,' Trump stated. 'He's doing a very good job,' Trump added. 'I'm very happy with it.' Trump was named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2024. Last month, the magazine's cover featured Trump removing former President Biden's belongings from the Oval Office Resolute Desk, accompanied by the headline, 'He’s Back.'
