As dozens of cities across the nation, including the capital, were overwhelmed this past weekend by civil unrest stemming from the killing of George Floyd,sequestered himself in the White House, whisked at one point to an underground bunker—utterly unable to meet a defining moment for the country and negligently unwilling even to try.

He put on a brave face the next morning, insisting he was never actually afraid. “I was inside, watched every move, and couldn’t have felt more safe,” he tweeted.
