President Trump's first day back in office saw him issue a series of executive orders, including one that directs a review of Pentagon policy on transgender troops, potentially leading to a ban on their service. He also ordered the reinstatement of soldiers discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccines, outlined rollbacks in diversity programs, and directed the development of a space-based missile defense system.
On his first day in office, Donald Trump signed an executive order directing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to review the Pentagon's policy on transgender troops , potentially paving the way for a future ban on their service. He also ordered the reinstatement of soldiers who had voluntarily left or were discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccines, outlined new rollbacks in diversity programs, and directed the deployment of a space-based missile defense shield for the United States.
Trump and Hegseth had previewed some of the anticipated orders throughout the day, but the precise text was not released until Monday evening. A ban on transgender troops was widely anticipated, and Trump's order sets the stage for a future prohibition, but it asks Hegseth to propose how the policy would be implemented. In the order, Trump asserted that the service of troops who identify with a gender different from their biological sex “conflicts with the commitment of a soldier to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in their personal life” and is detrimental to military readiness, requiring a revised policy to address the issue. This isn't the first time Trump has attempted to ban transgender soldiers. During his first term, he faced legal challenges that ultimately led to the ban being overturned by his successor, Joe Biden. Lambda Legal and Human Rights Campaign, who represented transgender troops during the previous legal battle, have pledged to fight again. “We've been here before, and seven years ago, we successfully blocked the previous administration’s effort,” said Sasha Buchert of Lambda Legal. “It's not only a cruel measure; it compromises the security and defense of our country and is particularly dangerous and wrong. As we promised then, as we do now: we will sue.” Another focus of Trump’s orders is space. During his first term, he established the Space Command and Space Force, which just celebrated its fifth anniversary. Space remains a priority for the president, who now has directed the Pentagon to begin developing the capability to shoot down missiles from space. For years, the United States has warned that China, Russia, and others were militarizing space. It has declassified information about both countries’ efforts to create offensive weapons to disable critical American satellites, including the ability to move satellites from their orbit, temporarily blind them, or even destroy them. The Space Force is building a ring of duplicate satellites in low Earth orbit that can track and detect missile launches more quickly. But establishing an option to shoot down missiles from space is something Washington hadn't pursued since Ronald Reagan announced the Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly known as “Star Wars,” in the 1980s
