The president's approval rating has remained unchanged since December, according to the poll.
President Donald Trump waves as he walks from Marine One after arriving on the South Lawn of the White House, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, in Washington. , released late Wednesday, found that Trump is beginning the year with a 44% approval rating.
And just like the president ended 2025, voters still believe the economy remains in bad shape and is unlikely to get better, according to the poll. The poll revealed that only 24% of Americans say they are financially better off than a year ago today, while 39% believe they are worse off and 36% said about the same. Over 4 in 10 respondents believe that the Trump administration’s economic policies have hurt them — about twice as many as those who say they have helped. On the economy, 7 in 10 Americans give it negative marks, compared to the 3 in 10 who rate it positively, the poll showed. While 45% of adults believe the economy will only get worse this year, 32% think it will get better. It is a stark contrast from last January, when voters by believed the economy would improve by a 2 percentage-point tally, according to the poll. The change in attitude is partly due to fewer Republicans now feeling optimistic, down from 63% to 58%. Overall, the poll found that 54% of respondents believe the country is worse off than it was a year ago, while 31% say the opposite. The wide gap is driven by Democrats and independents , who negatively rate the state of the country, compared to Republicans , who believe it is better off. “The president faces two difficult obstacles — the virtually unanimous and intractable opposition of Democrats and the stubbornness of high prices,” said Daron Shaw, the Republican pollster who helps conduct Fox News polls. “Republican officeholders think the economic benefits of the One Big Beautiful Bill will kick in later this year, which will be critical for GOP prospects in the midterm elections.” While Trump’s approval rating has remained unchanged since last month, it is two points higher than that of former PresidentHowever, disapproval of his performance in office is at or near all-time highs among independents , moderates and white voters , the poll concluded. The dissatisfaction is caused, in part, by Americans believing the president is focusing on the wrong things, such as too much time on foreign policy and less time on the economy., conducted from Jan. 23-26 among 1,000 registered voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
