President Trump's recent actions have drastically shifted U.S. policy towards Ukraine. He has initiated talks with Russian President Putin to end the war, bypassing the Ukrainian government. This move has sparked major concerns in Ukraine and among its Western allies.
President Donald Trump has significantly altered U.S. policy towards Ukraine, stating that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to commence negotiations for ending the war after a noteworthy prisoner exchange. Trump disclosed in a social media post that he and Putin engaged in a prolonged phone conversation, committing to 'work together, very closely' to bring the conflict to a resolution. They also pledged to meet in person, potentially even in each other's countries.
Trump subsequently revealed that he had also spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only after his conversation with Putin. Following these calls, White House officials refrained from clarifying whether Ukraine would be a participant in the U.S. negotiations. This sparked a potentially significant signal that Washington and Moscow could be working to forge a deal to end the fighting in Ukraine, potentially bypassing Ukraine's government. Such an approach would diverge from the Biden administration's stance, which resolutely maintained that Kyiv should be a full partner in any decisions made regarding the conflict.Adding to Ukraine's Western-leaning aspirations' challenges, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated at NATO headquarters in Brussels that NATO membership was unrealistic for Ukraine. He suggested Ukraine should forgo hopes of reclaiming all its territory from Russia and that any security guarantees for Kyiv would have to be provided by European countries. 'The United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement,' Hegseth declared. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Biden administration, alongside other NATO members, had pledged that membership in the Western military alliance was 'inevitable'. Zelenskyy attempted to present a confident front, despite what many in Ukraine perceive as a major disappointment. In a social media post, he claimed to have had a 'meaningful conversation' with Trump, which encompassed discussions on 'opportunities to achieve peace' and Kyiv's 'readiness to work together at the team level'
